Special: Ed Sheeran

Hij is inmiddels dik doorgebroken in zijn thuisland UK en ook in de USA en in Nederland is Ed Sheeran in korte tijd een heel grote naam geworden. Hij heeft diverse 3FM megahits op zijn naam staan, indrukwekkende optredens op Lowlands en Pinkpop, en een reeks uitverkochte concerten. In deze Special hoor je zijn verhaal! 'Mijn muzikale opleiding? Elke avond rondhangen met mijn favoriete band'

Het begint allemaal als Ed nog niet eens een pubertje is, met dit nummer: Eric Clapton - 'Layla'. Kleine Ed krijgt van zijn oom een gitaar en begint zichzelf te leren om gitaar te spelen. Niet heel veel later ziet hij songwriter Damien Rice optreden en beseft, dat je in je eentje, met je gitaar, een heel eind kan komen.

"I saw Damien Rice playing when i was 11. Then I realized that you didn't need a rockband. You could just stand at a stage with an acoustic guitar and hold a crowd. That was the first step in a career kind of way."

Ed Sheerans grote voorbeeld

Maar zijn grootste muzikale invloed als jonge muzikant is een naam waar degene die later de marketing moet doen voor zijn eerste album, koppijn van krijgt. Want: niet cool, niet sexy, en vooral ook helemaal niet zo bekend.

Ed is nou eenmaal eigenwijs en goudeerlijk, dus hij steekt zijn bewondering voor deze band niet onder stoelen of banken: Nizlopi, die ooit een bescheiden hitje scoorden met de 'JCB Song'. Ed leert wat hij moest leren over optreden van deze band, want als roadie van de band staat hij avond na avond bij op het podium.

Ed wordt zelf bekender en bekender als muzikant omdat hij overal optreedt en elke kans grijpt om zijn muziek te laten horen. Hij gaat van huis weg om in Londen te gaan wonen, het walhalla van de muziek, en slaapt twee jaar lang bij een vriend op de bank.

"Runaway is about my friend whose couch i've lived on for about two years. In the song I say: "I’ve known it for a long time. Daddy wakes up to a drink at nine". This guy literally used to wake up with a drink at nine. And I'd be like: "it's nine o clock in the morning". He's like: "not in Florida". And i'd say: "fair play"."

Eerste EP

Allemaal behoorlijk rock 'n roll, maar Ed verliest zijn ambities echt niet uit het oog. In 2005 brengt hij zijn eerste EP uit, in eigen beheer, en er zouden er nog zes volgen voor hij in 2011 zijn debuutalbum uitbrengt.

"11 releases in total before the album came. In those 11 releases I kind of worked out my sound. For the album it was simple, I really just did what I did at the last EP recordings. It was just a collage of thoughts and memories over songs. A collection of the best work I had done up until that time."

Amerika en Jamie Foxx

Hij schrijft en treedt op, in 2009 zelfs 312 dagen van het jaar, en in 2010 vertrekt hij op basis van één enkele gig die hij via via heeft gescoord, naar Amerika. Hij wordt er ontdekt door Jamie Foxx, die hem zijn studio leent om op te nemen, en vindt nieuwe fans. Een daar van is niemand minder dan Sir Elton John, die hem wat tips en trucs leert.

"There's no one that has managed to be as succesful as Elton John for a longer time as he had hits. From 'I'm Still Standing' up until the Lion King and stuff like that. He is just a great ally to have."

The 'A-Team'

Ed tekent in 2011 tekent een platencontract en in april dat jaar speelt hij zijn debuutsingle 'The A-Team' bij Jools Holland. Een single die hij kiest op aanraden van Elton John trouwens.

Het nummer is meteen een succes en de videoclip meteen veelbesproken - veel zenders willen m niet overdag draaien vanwege het onderwerp: het gaat over een verslaafde postituee.

I did a gig in a homeless shelter around two years ago. I was quite young and naive and hadn't really whitnessed that area in life before. It was a real eye opener for me. The song is based around a woman I met there.

"One day I was watching the charts in England and I was currently sitting at number three with 'The A-Team'. When it got to number 3 they didn't play the video, but the number two was Rihanna with 'S&M' where she deep-throats a banana. I guess some things are more accepted in popular culture than other things. You'd rather see someone sucking off a banana than with a crack pipe in their mouth."

Na The A-Team volgen er meer singles van +, waaronder 'Legohouse'. Het album doet het enorm goed; in de UK alleen al wordt het zes keer platinum.

'I See Fire' soundtrack The Hobbit

Voor Eds tweede album x uitkomt in 2014, scoort hij nog een grote hit, met de song 'I See Fire' die hij speciaal voor de film The Hobbit; The Desolation of Smaug schreef.

Toen regisseur Peter Jackson hem mailde met de vraag of hij een song wilde schrijven voor de film sprong hij direct in het vliegtuig naar Nieuw Zeeland. Hij had geen idee dat 'I See Fire' zijn prille succes nog eens een extra duw zou geven richting sterrendom.

"I got an email from peter Jackson saying can we have a song for The Hobbit. And I was like: "sure thing". I got on the first plane to New Zealand and It was quite a long flight. I landed in New Zealand early in the morning. I watched the film and then i went into the studio straight away. I had rough ideas and i sit down to structure out the song. It was one of the quickest songs I have ever written and actually recorded in the place it was written. It was a tiny little side studio. It was all programmed noises apart from the violin and the cello."

"When I wrote that song I never realized the impact it would have. I knew it would be in The Hobbit film and that people in the UK would buy it because I have quite a strong fanbase there. But it was the making of me in the most of Europe. It was a major hit in almost every European countries for weeks and really took me by surprise."

Na het succes van + , en de hit 'I See Fire', gaat het snel met Ed Sheeran.

"I didnt expect to be nominated for the Brit Awards but also to win two was a bigger surprise. In my head I had already accepted that I wouldn't win any. I was just gonna go and I was also gonna going to play. But winning two was quite a cool moment."

Achterover hangen en genieten van zijn succes is niet Eds stijl. Hij gaat na een uitgebreide tour aan de slag voor album nummer twee. Hij maakt zich geen zorgen over een writers block.

"Songs can always be written again and you can always write a better song. Even though a lot of people rate The A-Team as my best song, i'll probably write a better song in ten years. There is a famous Stevie Wonder quote where he was asked whether 'Superstition' was his best song. He responded with: "I haven't written my best song yet"."

Taylor Swift en One Direction

Naast eigen werk schrijft hij ondertussen ook nummers voor acts als Taylor Swift en One Direction. Het nieuwe album gaat X heten, wat staat voor multiply. Want alles wordt nog meer, nog grootser…

"X (multiply) stands for the sights getting bigger and you take everything from + that started it all off and then you just make it a lot bigger. You go from sportshalls into arenas and arenas into football stadiums. You go from acoustic songs to big Pharrell produced songs and from 10.000 sales to 100.000 sales. You multiply everything."

'Het gaat om de lyrics'

Zijn kenmerkende sound, een mix van singer-songwriter, folk en hiphop, verandert niet. Eigenlijk, zegt Ed, gaat het hem gewoon om steengoede lyrics, om verhalen - en dat is toch vaak de essentie van rap?

"The love of hiphop comes from a lyrical kind of view. If you grow up listening to Bob Dylan and then get into Eminem you can say that they are totally different artists. But if you put a guitar behind Eminems words then it's a very similar thing. Folk music tells stories and hiphop tells stories, there is just a beat that separates it."

Rap invloeden

Een muzikaal dieet van alles van Bob Dylan tot Eminem heeft Eds muziek zeker beïnvloed. Op album nummer twee wordt hij misschien nog wel meer beïnvloed door rap en Amerikaanse muziek. Hij luistert in die tijd vooral veel naar Lauryn Hill.

Snow Patrol en Lauryn Hill

Hij schrijft een deel van het album tijdens de Amerikaanse tour van Snow Patrol, waarbij hij het voorprogramma doet, samen met Snow Patrol gitarist Johnny, een goede vriend van hem. Ook werkt hij met de wereldberoemde producer Rick Rubin in L.A.

"I'd say America was an influence on the new sound. Not so much because I was taught that there was more than just the music that I was listening to. I listened to a lot of rap music while making the record. I listened to Lauryn Hill a lot, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was on repeat at that time."

Vooor X, de opvolger van +, werkt Ed samen met Johnny en Gary van Snow Patrol, met Ierse songwriter Foy Vance en met de jongens van Rudimental. Een groot deel van de productie is in handen van Rick Rubin, die ook Adele groot maakte in Amerika, maar er is nog iemand aan boord...een Ed fan van het eerste uur: Pharrell!

"He tweeted about my song 'The A-Team' saying he liked it and I met him at the Grammy's. And I was like: "thank you so much for saying you liked my song". He was like: "We should get in the studio". And I was like: "yeah we should"."

"I've always been a fan of Pharrell. I loved the N.E.R.D. and the Justin Timberlake stuff. Everything that he has done is quality."

Pharrell en Ed Sheeran 'Sing'

De bewondering is wederzijds, want Ed op zijn beurt is groot fan van Pharrell. Toch twijfelt hij of hij wel met Pharell de studio in wil. Het resultaat neemt alle twijfel weg.

"At first I kind of shyed away from it because i didn't want to do what everyone else was doing. We went in and we did three songs and they were some of the best piece of music I had done. He is a popular producer, everyones go-to guy because he is very talented. My first single is a song that could be played in the club. And I have never done a club song before."

Pharrell snapt net als Ed precies die mix tussen pop en rap. Pharell zingt zelfs mee op de single 'Sing'. De twee zijn sindsdien dikke vrienden.

I'm so proud of you. You were really someone out there at Madison Square Garden. Three days in a row, no one opening up, just you and your guitar. It is amazing to watch you grow and that it was even possible to become even bigger. To see what you are doing now is just amazing. Very proud of you. - Pharrell Williams

Zijn album X wordt een daverend succes en hij is niet meer van de radio te slaan met superhits als 'Don't', 'Photograph' en het romantische 'Thinking Out Loud' dat vele streamingrecords breekt en in juni 2015 52 weken, dus een vol jaar, in de UK top 40 staat.
