Jay-Z wil hiphopcultuur beschermen

Jay-Z en Kanye West blijken een ambitieus doel te hebben met hun Watch The Throne-album. Ze willen hiphop en de hiphop cultuur beschermen en zorgen dat het niet overschaduwd wordt door dance en indie.

Jay-Z beschermt de hiphop-troon

Hiphop is nu wat rock ‘n roll vroeger was voor de jeugd, zegt Jay-Z, maar dat kan zo weer afgelopen zijn.

“Watch the Throne, you protect it. You just watch how popular music shift[s], and just how hip hop basically replaced rock and roll as the youth music. The same thing can happen to hip hop. It can be replaced by other forms of music.”

Hiphop versus indie en dance

Met het Watch The Throne-project willen Jay-Z en Kanye West de strijd aan met dance en indie. Dat is nodig volgens Jay-Z , omdat hij ziet dat de hitlijsten steeds meer worden gedomineerd door dance muziek en de festivals door indie muziek.

“So we [are] making sure that we put the effort into making the best product so we can contend with all this other music, with all the dance music that’s dominating the charts right now and indie music that’s dominating the festivals.”

Pop-up store

Het album van het duo is pas net uit. Afgelopen maandag (8 augustus) was de digitale release, het was toen nog exclusief via de iTunes store te koop. En aan het eind van die week, op vrijdag, was de fysieke release en dat ging in stijl. Speciaal voor het album is er een tijdelijke winkel, de zogenoemde pop-up store, geopend in Manhattan New York. De winkel is van buiten al indrukwekkend, net als het album is het goudkleurig. En binnenin staat de auto uit de 'Otis' video.
