Als je Fontaines D.C. in de studio hebt kun je een gezellig babbeltje over het weer wel vergeten. 3FM-dj Eva Koreman had de Ierse indiepunkers te gast in 3voor12 Radio en het gesprek met frontman Grian ging al héél snel richting cynisme en je gevangen voelen in je eigen leven. Goedenavond!
Lekker cynisch
De teksten van Fontaines D.C. zijn vaak heel cynisch, met een reden. Grian is van mening dat cynisme noodzakelijk is om te snappen wat geluk écht inhoudt: zonder het een bestaat het ander niet. En als hij die teksten zingt, voelen ze eigenlijk helemaal niet zo cynisch.
Grian: "A lot of them are rooted in a sense of hope, actually! But hope terrifies me. It's like you're trapped in a cage: when you understand there are bars that lock you in, you feel trapped. Hope is when you try to get out, it brings up the inevitability of your further entrapment. It's a shocking thing when you have that epiphany."
Als Eva vraagt wanneer hij die openbaring zo'n beetje had, begint Grian te lachen: 'You asking me when I realized that I'm trapped in my life? I need a lie-down couch to answer this question! Prescribe me some meds first!"
Dogrel
Ook gaat het even over Dogrel, het album dat in april uitkomt. Dogrel is een Ierse vorm van creatieve rijmelarij die door taalfanaten niet 1-2-3 geaccepteerd wordt. Grian: "It's very Irish to reinterpret words that are derogatory. We take words like 'savage' that mean a bad thing, but transform it into something that means 'wow that's really good!'. It actually has some dark roots in history. There's been so many forces driving the Irish down over the years. We had to change the meaning of some words to take control of our own position within the hierarchy of the world."
