Tom Odell speelt deze week niet alleen de sterren van de hemel als support act van niemand minder dan Billie Eilish in een uitverkochte Ziggo Dome, maar staat ook in de 3FM Live Box. Met zijn nieuwste single ‘Don't Let Me Go’ bezorgt hij – zoals alleen hij dat kan – heel 3FM (en de hele Ziggo Dome) kippenvel. Voor het optreden sprak Tom ook nog uitgebreid met Wijnand over hoe deze nieuwe track tot stand kwam, de inspiratie die hij haalt uit hedendaagse artiesten en natuurlijk: Billie Eilish.
Nieuwe single, vertrouwde klasse
Op 25 april verscheen zijn nieuwe single ‘Don't Let Me Go’. Het is zijn eerste release van 2025, en het is er gelijk een waar je niet omheen kunt. De track is geschreven in 3/4-maat – niet alledaags en heeft de sfeer van een (jawel) langzame wals. De tekst gaat over verlies en het niet willen loslaten. Letterlijk: “Don’t let me go”… Tom houdt het klein, ingetogen, stijlvol en zingt met precies genoeg mysterie. En juist dát maakt hem zo sterk, opnieuw te horen in de 3FM Live Box.

Tom Odell over 'Don't Let Me Go': "It’s like waking up from an anxiety dream."
In het interview met Wijnand vertel Tom meer over hoe deze track tot stand is gekomen: "Around the time I was writing it last year, there was all this craziness in the news like there always is. I think I was looking at forest fires in California and the wars. We're living through curiously strange times, as if it feels like the world might end in a day.
More so than anything, it's our access to it—the kind of 24-hour news cycle through your phone. And then the news has now infiltrated social media. You're getting this constant barrage of information. One would be, I think, insane not to feel overwhelmed by it.
I don't know, I guess the song is a grasp, a kind of reaching to somebody as you feel these flames and fires come closer outside the window. But also this strange feeling that we've learned to live amongst it. We seem to have learned to just get on and look away.
I think the most weird thing about our time is that Instagram Stories swipe—you see horrific images of horrific news items that are horrifying, and you blink and it's someone having a mojito in the Bahamas. Then there's someone on stage. There is something very numbing about that. For me, it's interesting to write about.
There is a line in that song: 'Don't let me go.' It's like the forest is filling with fire—turn off the TV, I don't wanna know—and then they're taking your body away. Don't let me go, I won't let me go.
It's like that TV show The Last of Us—it's all of that in there. It's a tragedy, I guess. I almost think this song is… you then wake up, and everything is fine, and it was just an anxiety dream."

Van album naar arena’s
De nieuwe single volgt op zijn goed ontvangen album Black Friday uit 2024. En als je dacht dat de primeur van ‘Don’t Let Me Go’ alles was, heb je het mis. De zanger trakteert ook op een liveversie van ‘Black Friday’ in de 3FM Live Box– nog zo'n práchtige track die live alleen maar meer kippenvel oplevert:
