"Those songs are two sides of the same coin: they're about seduction and sex. Seduction on every level: not just sexual but also political. Seduction is exciting, but it's also a transference of power. An abdication or an acquisition of power, but then what does power look like?" Nou, zó ziet het er dus uit.

Respect

St. Vincent: "We also wanted to give a little nod to the late Queen Of Soul by singing 'Respect', but in a sort of fucked up dom-sub thing, like sexy. I don't know if it has ever been sung with that intonation before. 'Respect' was such an incredible song for civil rights and people of color in the Sixties. It feels anthemic in that context, but also when it comes to the liberation of women. There's this lyric in there, 'sock it to me'. It's playful, but a mixed message for sure. So when Dua sang it to me in that context, it felt really fucked up and sexy."

Step up

Vorig jaar raakte hij in opspraak door een nogal onhandige uitspraak: "Women who want to be musicians, engineers, producers and want to be part of the industry on executive levels need to step up."

I'm honored to be nominated alongside so many incredible female artists this year... I guess this year we really stepped up!"

St. Vincent over die opmerking: "I think it was awesome that she said that. People in any marginalized position have long been told the myth that if they only worked a little harder then they too could inherit the earth. And I’m glad she referenced the ignorance and arrogance of his particular statement. It’s absolutely idiotic."
